The Sparrow King Black

by Martin Brennan

when i was a boy

my mama told me

“son, i will always be there for you”

now i’m a grown man

she’s long passed

and sometimes i still don’t know what to do

to do

i think that i’ll go join the circus

but if i’m lonesome

who will i call

and if they put me up on the trapeze

who’s gon’ catch me if i fall

if i fall

up on the wall

i see china

i think that i’ll go visit someday

but i’m a grown man and i know

china is so very far away

sometimes i miss your face so badly

i fall down on my knees and pray

but i’m a grown man

i can take it

why are you so very far away
